Inspiral Carpets

Inspiral Carpets

British alternative rock band

Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band formed in Oldham in 1983. The group is part of the late 1980s and early 1990s Madchester movement, which blended alternative rock, psychedelic rock, and electronic music. They are known for their organ-led sound and distinctive vocals. The band's classic lineup consisted of Clint Boon (keyboards), Craig Gill (drums), Tom Hingley (vocals), Graham Lambert (guitar), and Martyn Walsh (bass). Inspiral Carpets gained commercial success with albums such as "Life" (1990) and "The Beast Inside" (1991). Their single "This Is How It Feels" brought them to public attention, charting in the UK Top 40. They continued to release successful albums including "Revenge Of The Goldfish" (1992) and "Devil Hopping" (1994), which contained hits like "Saturn 5" and "I Want You." The band split in 1995 but reformed in 2003 with their original singer, Stephen Holt, who had been replaced by Hingley in the late '80s. They continued to tour and release new material until the untimely death of drummer Craig Gill in 2016. Their influence can be seen in the work of later bands who drew from the Madchester sound.
