Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson

Celebrated African American Contralto Vocalist

Marian Anderson (1897–1993) was a renowned American contralto singer who became an important figure in the struggle against racial prejudice during the mid-20th century. Her career was marked by a series of groundbreaking achievements and performances. In 1939, after being denied the opportunity to perform at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution because of her race, Anderson gave a historic Easter Sunday concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which was attended by more than 75,000 people and broadcast to millions.
