Renowned Swiss-American Orchestral Conductor

Maurice de Abravanel (1903–1993) was a distinguished conductor with a career that spanned over five decades. Born in Greece and raised in Switzerland, he was a descendant of a Sephardic Jewish family with deep cultural roots. Abravanel is particularly noted for his tenure as the Music Director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, a position he held from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. Under his leadership, the Utah Symphony grew from a part-time ensemble into a full-fledged, nationally recognized orchestra.
