Metallica is an iconic American heavy metal band formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. Known for their fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship, Metallica's early releases are considered foundational to the thrash metal genre. The band's third album, "Master of Puppets," released in 1986, was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. Their self-titled album, often referred to as "The Black Album," released in 1991, brought them mainstream success and is one of the best-selling albums worldwide. Over the years, Metallica has won numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards, and has sold over 125 million albums globally. The band's lineup has included bassists Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a bus accident in 1986, Jason Newsted, who replaced Burton and was with the band until 2001, and Robert Trujillo, who joined in 2003. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett has been a constant member since he replaced original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine in 1983 shortly before the recording of their debut album "Kill 'Em All."
