The English Concert is a baroque orchestra playing on period instruments, founded by harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock in 1972. The ensemble quickly gained an international reputation for its performances of baroque and classical music. Although primarily an instrumental ensemble, The English Concert often collaborates with its choir, The English Concert Choir, for choral works. Under Pinnock's direction until 2003, and subsequently under the leadership of Andrew Manze and Harry Bicket, the group has toured extensively, performing in Europe, Asia, and North America. They have made numerous recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and Harmonia Mundi, including works by composers like Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach. Their performances of Handel's "Messiah" have been particularly acclaimed, showcasing their commitment to historically informed performance practice.
