The physiology of the human ear's perception of sound suggests that for the same sensation of volume, a lowhigh frequencies, far more power is required than is sufficient for the mid and high frequencies. The lowest frequency is also proportional to the size of the loudspeaker diaphragm and the internal volume of the cabinet. It is physically impossible for speakers of smaller dimensions to transmit the lowest bass. The solution is to add an active subwoofer - a dedicated speaker to reproduce only the lowest bass frequencies in the reproduction chain.

Here again, acoustics and the physiology of sound perception by the human ear play a role. The ear perceives very precisely the direction from which higher frequency sounds come. The survival of our ancestors depended on hearing where the snake hissed from, where the leaves rustled under the beast. The high frequencies spread as a narrow beam, the middle frequencies become a cone, and the low bass frequencies spread spherically. This means that for low bass frequencies up to about 100 Hz we cannot determine where they are coming from.

The active subwoofer solution is also advantageous in that the power is not so much loaded on the main amplifier and the active switch in the subwoofer compensates for the inherent frequency response of the sub-bass driver and the soundboard.

Theactive subwoofer of the AQ Wega 54 MKIII is integrated in a sound enclosure made of a combination of MDF and DTD panels. For accurate reproduction of the lowest frequencies, excellent cabinet rigidity, good tuning and a quality power amplifier with active excursion are required. That's why the Wega 54 MKIII uses a sophisticated cabinet design combined with a 10" woofer from the renowned PEERLESS brand and a custom-made active module with a large toroidal transformer in the power section.

The loudspeaker stands out with its extremely large diaphragm excursion and powerful magnetic circuit. It has a high sensitivity which enables it to generate the necessary sound pressure. To increase the rigidity of the soundboard, the Wega 54 MKIII uses the BDS active vibration damping system in the sandwich top plate.

Thebassreflex is Y-shaped. Thanks to this exceptional concept, it can have a longer length while the walls of the bassreflex are part of the soundboard bracing.

A separate enclosed chamber then houses the electronic turnout and power amplifier unit. Its controls allow for frequency division, input sensitivity control and phase switching. The integrated automatic stand-by function is switchable.
