When laid-back roots reggae replaced the gritty rude boy/skinhead sound in the UK. In the UK in the late 60s, skinheads and reggae were closely allied. There were two reasons. Firstly, the mods were already listening mainly to R&B, soul and ska. Secondly, many Skins were recruited from Jamaican immigrant families. These boys, who called themselves "rude boys" after the gangsters of the Kingston slums, listened to music from their parents' homeland: ska until 1966, rocksteady from 1966-1968, and reggae from 1968 onwards. Unlike the slow and soulful rocksteady, early reggae was quite rough and played fast and rhythmically. From 1971 onwards, the Skins' association with reggae was severed. Firstly because the more spiritual, slower played roots reggae came into vogue, which was uninteresting to many Skins, and secondly because quite a few Skins evolved into Suedeheads. The Suedeheads adopted the Skins' sleek style, but changed it with small details like hair length or sock color. In addition, the Suedeheads distanced themselves from the macho and violent culture of the Skins and, alongside Northern Soul, preferred the laid-back reggae sound of artists such as Alton Ellis, Pat Kelly, Cornell Campbell, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, Max Romeo and Horace Andy. All are represented on this compilation with excellent tracks.
